Personal Profile: Scott Sawyer – Pool & Shade

Scott, a big welcome from the Samui Phangan Real
Estate Magazine, pool expert and long term Samui
resident could you tell us a little about where you
were born and how you’ve ended up on Samui?

I am originally from the UK and I first came to Thailand
on business in 2005. We were here to attend a
Bangkok property investment expo.

When did your professional interest in pools start?

It all started back in 2006 when we opened our first
swimming pool showroom, we noticed a niche in
the market for a good swimming pool construction
and equipment company, there was quite a building
boom at the time and there seemed like room for a
good reliable pool company. We also had numerous
contacts outside of Thailand that were marketing new
and innovative pool products that were not available
here at the time.

What services do you offer for swimming pools?

We can undertake anything pool related from a brand
new constructed pool or supply of pool equipment
to a simple monthly maintenance contract taking
care of a client’s pool. We cater for both residential
and commercial clients from a small single villa pool
to numerous hotel or resort villa pools within the
same site. We also offer a unique alternative to tiles
for pool interiors from one of our supply partners,
namely Paradise Pool Interiors of which we have a
good selection of their products on display in our
showroom.

What would a typical pool installation be?

A typical pool installation would be the pool hydraulics
and pump room, often we work alongside the main
building contractor and supply a plan for the structural
pipework inside the pool itself which we would then
install. We would then specify, supply and install
the equipment inside the main pump room, which
would consist of the pump, filtration and sanitization
equipment.

When did you open Pool & Shade, and why “Pool
& Shade?”

Pool & Shade opened its doors in 2015. We are
involved in pool equipment manufacture in Australia
where we also construct many swimming pools,
predominately in the Surfers Paradise area on the
Gold Coast. It was there that we noticed that on
nearly every pool we constructed or installation we
carried out, a third party contractor would come
along and install either a shade sail or awning over, or
around the pool area, so we thought why not combine
the complete concept all under one roof back in
Thailand? After all, we have the weather for it!

Where is your showroom now on Samui and are you
planning on expanding to any other locations?

Our current location in Samui is opposite the PTT
(LPG) station on the Samui, Bophut ring road. The
concept so far has been a hit, so who knows, in the
near future we may well expand to other areas in
Thailand. With such close proximity though to Koh
Phangan we have already undertaken numerous
projects over there, utilising both Pool and Shade
products. We have also had a good response from
neighbouring Koh Tao.

What are your most popular shade products?

Our most popular products would be blinds, shade
sails and sala structures, We supply and install a
fair amount of quality exterior motorized vertical
blinds and shade sails, again to both residential and
commercial applications. We also offer a range of
prefabricated outdoor salas that come in a huge range
of designs, sizes and colours. Or simply if you have a
design we can make it for you.

We notice that you advertise shade sails. Can you
briefly explain what a shade sail is?

A shade sail is essentially a fabric (shade only) or
waterproof membrane that is tensioned between a
number of fixed points, whether they be vertical or
raked posts or poles and/or stainless steel or painted
anchors secured to an existing building. Shade sails
are extremely versatile and very effective in creating
a nicely shaded area, be it across a pool or perhaps
over a decking area to utilize a space that was before
unusable due to its exposure to the sun and the
elements.

Do you offer a design service for the shade sails?
They seem quite technical.
Yes we do. The normal procedure is for us to visit your property to discuss
your requirements, take some measurements and go through some basic
design ideas. We would then take some photos of the site and note the
bearing of where the particular area is facing, North, South, East or West.
From this, we then pass on the information to our team of designers who
then create a 3-D digital drawing of exactly how the shade sail will look in
your particular chosen location. From having the information of where the
property is facing we can also show where the shaded areas will fall at
different given times of the year.

Can you tell us where your most popular application is for a shade sail?

Generally in and around pool and decking areas, but that said we have also
installed Shade sails in and around car parking areas and hotel and resort dining
areas. shade sails are so versatile they can pretty much be installed anywhere.

What warranties do you offer on your shade installations?

Our warranties on shade and blind installations are generally 5 years
depending on the fabrics and materials chosen.

We noticed in previous publications you mention outdoor furniture, can
you tell us a little about this?

Yes, we also offer a line in outdoor sofas and fabric seating, including good
quality standalone umbrellas and huge commercial grade cantilevered
umbrellas. All of the range utilize “Sunbrella” outdoor marine grade fabric
that comes in a wide range of colours that would complement any existing
colour schemes that a client might currently have.
