At Tropicana Restaurant and Pizzeria, opened in 2006 and owned by two long-time friends Karl and Diego, you will be sure to find both Pasta and Magic along with good music and a smiling service.
Let’s start with the most important element for a restaurant, THE FOOD. Under Diego’s tight supervision Tropicana’s kitchen delivers only authentic and traditional Italian dishes.
Starting with the appetizers you will find delicious caprese, beef filet carpaccio, cold cuts and sautéed clams in tomato sauce also big fresh salads, homemade bruschetta and focaccia sandwiches. Tropicana’s pizzas are thin crusted and use only top Italian quality ingredients for its toppings, the bestselling pizza is the wonderful Parma Ham, Rucola and Parmesan Cheese, closely followed by the always loved Diavola pizza (Salame and chili peppers).The Pasta, I don’t really know where to start, if there is any complaint you can give these guys, it’s that the menu is too big. Let’s start with the Carbonara, one of the best knwn pasta dishes in the world but also the most counterfeited, this because the original recipe was never officially registered like Amatriciana or Pesto Genovese, at Tropicana they serve the most authentic carbonara, using only Egg-yolk, pecorino and parmesan cheese, cured pork cheek, black pepper and of course magic, simply delicious. Continuing down the list you will find all the classic sauces like homemade fettuccine Boscaiola or meat balls, homemade gnocchi with 4 cheeses or tomato and mozzarella, spaghetti with fresh local fish such as blue Crab meat, rock lobster or mixed seafood. The list could go on and on, but I must leave room to tell you about the main dishes too.
Italian cuisine is not just pasta and pizza, and here you can choose some delicious fish and meat for your main courses, the bestselling fish dish is the Seabass filet cooked and served with cherry tomatoes and Kalamata olives, you can also try with a delicate white wine sauce or a yummy lemon sauce. From the grill you can order Barracuda, Salmon or Red Tuna filet, all slowly cooked on a lava rock grill. For the meat lovers Tropicana offers a wide variety of choices, from chicken BBQ, slowly cooked pork ribs, Italian sausages to Australian Angus Fillet and Rib eye.
Of course good food calls for good drinks and Tropicana seem to have this covered to perfection… Diego and Karl both grew up in Vicenza, North Eastern Italy, home to the famous Spritz and Grappa, and you will find plenty at Tropicana along with probably the best Negroni on the island, Thai Craft Beer and amazing Gin and Tonics, using only top quality Gins and offering a wide selection of tonics. Their wine list is impressive, offering wines for all wine lovers, from Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, which is their house wine, to Primitivo, Chianti and Valpolicella. On the white wine side we start with Prosecco and Sauvignon Blanc for the house choices and move on to Lugana, Vermentino and a beautiful Pinot Grigio. Their motto for wine is “Wine is Divine” and I can’t agree more.
The dessert list includes all the classics such as tiramisu and panna cotta but the real treat is their “affogato al caffe” a serving of homemade vanilla ice cream with a shot of real Italian espresso.
The location is welcoming, cozy and warm with a real “trattoria style” feeling, anybody that has been to Italy knows what I mean, there is an energetic and vibrant atmosphere thanks also to the music selection, which for the owners is just as important as the food and drinks, Nu-Jazz and Down-Tempo Funk is usually what is playing but don’t be surprised if you hear Warren G rapping or Jack White playing the Blues when you walk in, depends what mood the guys are in.
Tropicana’s mission is to bring “A real taste of Italy to Lamai”, and that’s exactly what they do.
